Frequently Asked Questions
About Me
-
Yes, I am licensed through the Virginia Board of Nursing and have a Certificate in Professional Massage Therapy from the Cortiva Institute (a 720-hr. program). I’ve also completed over 250 continuing education hours currently working towards my Anatomy Trains Structural Integration Certification.
Scheduling, Payments, and Policies
-
The best way to schedule an appointment is online but you can also text/call 804-251-3915 to set up an appointment or share any questions/concerns you may have about services.
-
Walk-in appointments are unavailable, but I do allow same-day appointments if I am available. That being said, my online booking portal requires a 2-hour notice. If you want a same-day appointment with less notice, you can always call to see if I have a last-minute slot. Again, you MUST have an appointment. Walk-ins appointments cannot be accommodated.
-
I offer couples massage and spa services (e.g., body wraps or scrubs) at Awaken Day Spa. At my 2004 Bremo Rd location I do not offer these services.
-
To keep on schedule and as a courtesy to other clients, if you arrive late, you will receive the remaining appointment time. The full treatment price will apply.
-
if you need to cancel your appointment. I have a 24 hour cancellation policy. This means all appointments canceled before 24 hours will not be charged. If you cancel within24 hours of your appointment you will be charged 50% of the service fee. If you do not show up for your appointment without notifying me, you will be charged 100% of the service fee.
-
While I require a credit card to book/hold the appointment, I do not charge you until after your appointment. At your session’s end, I can either charge the card on file, or accept payment via cash or Venmo. I do not accept checks. To collect and process credit cards I use pocketsuite.io which is PCI compliant in protecting your sensitive information.
-
As a private practice, I do not accept insurance.
Massage (Before, During, and After)
-
Please arrive 5-10 minutes prior to your appointment, so we can have a brief consultation before the session. During this time, we’ll check in and talk through your needs and goals. I may also offer bodyreading and other manual therapy assessment techniques to help determine a viable treatment plan. Your treatment plan is based on this initial consultation but may be adapted during the session based on my real-time assessments and your feedback. After the session we’ll have a brief (5-10 minute) post-session debrief to determine any therapeutic change.
If you book a 60-minute massage, you will get 60 minutes of hands on, pre- and post-session consults are not counted toward your session time (though, to respect the time of other clients, these consults cannot total more than 15 minutes).
-
Bodyreading aids in assessing posture and functionality. Soft tissue and myofascial pain typically emerge when we fall into dysfunctional movement and postural patterns (i.e., sitting at a desk all day, repeatedly lifting/carrying children, or standing for hours on end). No matter the activity, the body will adapt to compensate. Bodyreading sheds light on these maladaptions so each client can receive the support and bodywork needed for healthier patterns, greater balance, and more pain-free movement.
-
Come as you are. Hygiene is important, but don’t feel obligated to change your normal routes for the purpose of your sessions. Also, no need to feel anxious about naturally growing hair, it will not affect the bodywork/treatment.
-
The rule of thumb is to dress to your comfort. I utilize sheet draping techniques, so you are never overly-exposed, and breast tissue and genitals are always draped/clothed in all sessions.
It can also depend on your goals for the session. If your goals are relaxation and stress reduction, dressing down to fully nude or just underwear can offer the therapist greater access to tense tissues/muscles and allows for the use of oils without the risk of staining clothing. If your are receiving ATSI® Structural Bodywork, goals, wearing running shorts and sport bras can allow the therapist access to the tissue while also enabling you to move into a variety of different postures quickly and effectively. (Typically, ATSI® Structural Bodywork sessions do not use massage oil, so there is no risk of it staining your clothing.)
-
It is a massage session focusing on relaxation and stress reduction, engaging in conversation is up to the client. I am happy to talk if the conversation is appropriate. Any conversation that discriminates against another group of people, is based in sexually favors, or rooted in political fascism will be asked to change the subject. One warning will be given and on a second offence, the session be at risk of being terminated. The full amount will be charged.
With that side, within a ATSI® Structural Bodywork Session, most conversations will be the therapist asking questions about what your body is feeling and asking you to tune into their experience during the session.
-
Before your visit you will be asked to complete an online intake questionnaire, being as specific as possible on this form will give the therapist an idea if there are any risk in receiving massage.
Massage/bodywork is a great tool for healing the body, but it may not be appropriate for all conditions. Some conditions require rescheduling/canceling the appointment, some conditions require modifications, and some conditions require approval from a physician.
On your online form please make sure to let your therapist know if you have,
acute injury from major accidents
Soft tissue damage sprains, strains etc.
major swelling or edema
Acute condition such as flared up psoriasis, eczema, or rheumatoid arthritis,
any removals or replacements or wounds (e.g., spinal fusions, hip/knee replacements, lymph nodes removal, stitches, pins/needles, etc.)
Other serious medical conditions (e.g. Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis, HPB, Diabetes, cancer, etc.)
-
Please inform your therapist before the session if you have a skin condition. Acne and rashes can be further exacerbated by massage, and your therapist should not touch warts.
Other Questions
-
No, please do not consume marijuana or alcohol before your massage. These substances can dull nerve endings, which could lead to a therapist using too much pressure and causing unknown harm to you.
-
Arousal and erection are natural parasympathetic responses, so there is no need to feel awkward or uncomfortable if they occur. However, it is important to note it is not a therapist’s intention to arouse you, and that you are invited to share any concerns or boundaries you have with your therapist. For example, if you are ever concerned about a particular technique, you should feel empowered to ask your therapist to stop that motion.
Licensed Massage Therapists follow a strict professional code of conduct and ethics, and are expected to provide clear boundaries and safe and respectful spaces. I also have a zero-tolerance policy for sexual advances, innuendo, or inappropriate touch. If you engage in those behaviors I reserve the right to terminate your session immediately.
